Dec. 8th Meet Results and Looking Forward

Results

I'm so proud of all our swimmers from Saturday!
Here are the meet results. December 8th Swim Meet Results

Starting Blocks Clinic

We had a great practice on the blocks after the meet. They are working hard to improve!

Homework

Here is the video the swimmers watched during the starting blocks clinic as well as an additional video.
I am also including pictures Aaron Starr took. Please find your swimmer(s) pictures so they can see what they look like coming off the blocks. Video and pictures like this help the swimmers to be able to see what they are doing and be able to make more accurate corrections. Thank you for the pictures, Aaron!

Qualifying

Everyone qualifies for Championships as long as they have competed in at least 2 developmental meets. Swimmers must swim certain times to qualify for the All-Star meet. You can find the time chart on the CYO website. I am including a link here: All-Star Meet Qualification Times

December 8th Swim Meet

Please be at the indoor Mt. Hood Community College Pool by 1:40pm.

December 8th Meet Program

Volunteers

Holy Family is hosting this meet. They are a big team and have most jobs covered. However, they are hoping to get enough timers to have 2 stationed at each lane and at each end of the pool. They may need a few more timers to make that happen. Please let me know if you'd like to volunteer. They will let you know Saturday if they still need you or not.

Special Request

One of our swim team members, Madeleine Vore, has a birthday on Saturday. Her mom, Jenn Vore, has asked us to help her celebrate! She will have cookies for all the swim teamers (to be enjoyed after the meet) as we gather and sing happy birthday before the meet begins.

After the Meet

If the meet ends early, I will be hosting a diving clinic. Please stay if you can, so we can take advantage of practicing with the blocks.

Practice Tonight and an Update

Today's (12/6) Practice

The swimmers had a hard, but great workout today. The main set of the workout was 3x100yd. The main challenge was for them to get faster every 100. They all worked so hard to do their best today. I was very proud of them. A special thanks to Sam Nunez, Amy McMahon, Jenn Larsen, Jane Overall, Coach Johnson, and Coach Starr for timing and recording times for our us today. If your swimmer doesn't remember what their 100 times were from tonight and you are interested in knowing, please let me know and I will email them to you! It great

Google Calendar

I have updated the google calendar on the blog to reflect any updates/changes to the championships schedule.

Getting Ready for the November 10th Swim Meet

Location Change

Be sure to keep your eyes on the google calendar at the bottom of our blog. I will always have it updated. The meet on November 10th has changed locations and time. The meet will be at Reynolds Pool (1220 NE 201st Ave. Fairview, Or. 97024) from 1-4pm on Nov. 10th.

Email by Monday

Please email me to let me know if your swimmer(s) will be at the meet on the 10th. Even if you've already let me know in person, please email me anyway. I don't trust myself to remember. :)

We have a meet under our belts. Include in the above email if you have any input on what events your swimmer(s) would like to swim for the upcoming meet. Please email me by Monday, November 5th.

Coach Substitute

I will not be at the meet on the 10th. This will be the only meet I will miss. Coach Starr and Coach Johnson will be leading the team with assistance from Jen Vore. All communication will still come through me and I will relay any meet pertinent updates to the coaches. I will not be leaving until after practice on Thursday. I will be available by email Friday and Saturday and I will respond quickly. Side note, there is no dry land practice this coming Friday, November 9th.

November 3rd Swim Meet Results

I am so proud of each and every swimmer at the meet today. Everyone tried their best, encouraged their teammates, and was a great example of Christ.

Thank You

Thank you to everyone who volunteered at the meet! I know the head coach at St. Rose was very appreciative. It's our turn to host in 2 weeks. Please be considering if you can help and what you'd like to help with.

Results

Here are the meet results. Meet #1 Results
I had so much fun looking through them! Our swimmers did so well today! Of the 17 swimmers that swam today, 9 were returning swimmers. Our 9 returners racked up 17 personal best times (PRs) and earned several first in their heat ribbons. Our 8 new swimmers also took home a few first in their heat ribbons and set great first times. I will be handing out ribbons from the meet this week.

Friday, November 2, 2018

November 3rd Swim Meet

Please be at the indoor pool of Mount Hood at 1:40 on Saturday, November 3rd.

Swim Meet Info

I posted swim meet information in a separate post right before this one. Please be sure to read it!

Meet Program

Volunteers

The team hosting the meet has requested for us to put out another cry for help. If you are able to sign up to help during the meet, we would really appreciate it! Click on this link: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/70a094ea4ab23a1fe3-cohost to see what jobs still need to be filled. If you are not ready to take on a job but would like to learn that job so that you can take it on for the meet we host in 2 weeks, sign up for it and put shadow in the comments.

Also, Amy McMahon needs someone to cover her last hour as a timer (from 4-5pm). Please email me or Amy if you are able to help her out.

Coaching switch up

Karen Johnson will not be this coming meet. Jen Vore will be filling in. Thank you, Jen!

Swim Meet Info - For All Meets

When we get there

I would like all swimmers to be at the pools 20 minutes early. Please do not be there earlier than 30 minutes before the start of the meet. Our CYO director says that can cause scheduling confusion at the pools.

When you get to the pool, you should be able to go in and use the locker rooms to have your swimmer get dressed and go to the bathroom.

I would like for all swimmers to be in their suits with swim cap on and goggles and swim bag in hand 10 minutes before the start of the meet. We will congregate in the stands with swimmers and parents. Soon after that, we will pray and the swimmers and coaches will head out for the warm-up which will begin promptly at the time the meet was scheduled to begin.

Swim Bag

-one or two towels
-sweats or bathrobe to go over swimsuit while they are not swimming
-goggles
-competition suit
-WHCS swim cap (handed out at practice November 1st)
-1 or 2 snacks (no glass)
-water bottle (no glass)
-No Technology

Meet Program

I will post the meet program in the blog post that I will send out before each swim meet. Feel free to print it off and bring this with you so you can follow along during the meet. The swim meet is a rolling schedule which means that we begin with the first event on the program and just roll through to the end. There is no specific time an event will be held.

During the meet

Our awesome assistant coaches, Karen Johnson and Jana Starr, will be with the swimmers and myself in the team area. We will be keeping an eye on the swimmers while they're not swimming an event, encouraging them to cheer for one another, and making sure they are ready for their events when they are called.

Volunteers

I will always be looking for 1 parent to be the photographer. We have been asked to have all the parents stay in the stands, but I know we would all love some great action shots of the swimmers. We are allowed a "photographer" per team. Please let me know if you are interested. It can be a different person each meet or if you want to do multiple meets, that's great too!

After events are done

I would love to encourage you all to stay for the whole meet so we can all cheer for the swimmers swimming at the end of the meet. However, if you have something that can't be rescheduled, I understand if you need to leave after your swimmer has swum their events. If you could come over to the team area to get them and make sure they check out with myself or with one of the assistants, that would be great! Thank you!

Path to Meet #1

We have 3 swim practices and 2 dry land practices before our first meet! Today we went over breaststroke and surface dives. Thursday, my mom (Coach Graham) will go over flip turns, starts and stops, and pull downs. I will continue to cover all the strokes and do my best to make sure the swimmers are ready.

What I Need from You

Will you be at the meet? Please let me know by Tuesday, October 30th. Are you willing to help? This would be a great chance to shadow someone doing a job you could do for the meet we host. Please let me know if you are interested in volunteering.

Meet Entries

I will be choosing the swimmers' entries for the meet with input from you and your athlete. Swimmers can talk to me at dry land practice this Friday about what they would like to swim. If they will not be at practice on Friday, please remind them to touch base with me on Thursday. If you have any thoughts on the matter, please grab me in person to chat or email me. I would like to have entries ready by the Tuesday before each meet. For this meet, that would be October 30th. If I don't hear from you, I will enter swimmers in the events I think would be best.

Order of Events

Here is a link to the general order of events for all of the meets except the championships. Meet Order of Events The day before the meet I will send a link for the meet heat sheets.

2nd Week Part 2

No Practice

There will be no dry land practice tomorrow, October 19th. Our first practice at WHCS will be next week, October 26th.

Turtles Yoga and Wellness

The facility we are practicing at would like to offer 10% off of any classes for parents of our swimmers. :)

Stroke Mechanic Group

Our first Stroke Mechanic Group went well today! My hope is to get these swimmers to the point where their body position is where it needs to be, their kick gets stronger, and they know the correct form for each of the strokes they'll be swimming in meets. Once they are strong and ready, I will move them into their leveled workout group.

Uniforms

WHCS red swim caps will be provided. I will hand them out the practice before our meet. I will write their names on them. Replacement caps will be $5. If you still would like to be involved in the Swimsuit Swap, contact Jennifer Vore at jennifer_vore@hotmail.com. You can also buy new, or purchase googles or pracitce suits at www.swimoutlet.com/WHCS. A percentage of the purchase price paid from our page goes to West Hills! If you are going to order a suit for meets, order soon to ensure delivery.

2nd Week of Practice

Practice went well today! I'm learning how to multi-task to meet the needs of each swimmer. I will be dividing the swimmers into more groups and assigning different workouts/instruction beginning Thursday. We will also be beginning back stroke. For some swimmers it will be an introduction, for others we'll be perfecting technique. Thank you to Jana Starr and Karen Johnson as well as all the parents on deck helping each week. I couldn't do it without you!

Conditioning: Because we only meet 3 times a week, conditioning on the days we don't meet would be a huge benefit. This can be accomplished by being active 30 minutes each day.

Homework: We record some interval times during practice. Because there are a lot of swimmers, it is helpful if they can tell me what their split was. If you could have them practice by looking at a manual clock and say "go" and then "stop" and have them tell you how long it was between "go" and "stop" that would be helpful.

Swimsuit Swap

We have many wonderful volunteers this year! Jennifer Vore has stepped up to faciliate the Swim Suit Swap this year. This will give some a chance to use a used suit instead of buying new. Jennifer has some information to pass along about all of that as well as where to buy suits new. You can also buy goggles or any other swimming equipment you need on our school page. The school recieves a percentage of whatever is purchased on our page.

It would be great for all our swimmers to be in our team suit. However, this is not mandatory. If they are in a plain black suit or a subtle design of black or red, that will be fine. Our swimmers will all be wearing our red WHCS swim caps at meets. Our first meet is coming soon: November 3rd!

From Jennifer:

Hi, Team Parents.  Allison Bates wonderfully set up a box for collecting swimsuits near the secretary's desk at school.  If you have a suit to donate, please place it in the box today or this week.  Parents of former team members will also be donating suits this week.  After the suits are collected, we will see who needs to order new suits.

Everyone, please go to our team site at www.swimoutlet.com/WHCS to size your child for a new or used suit by their next practice.  Remember, they need to be tight.  Let me now their size so I can match up donated swimsuits.  Or, you are welcome to just go ahead and purchase one.

For boys, I also recommend buying jammers instead of using trunks for practices.  I found that swimoutlet sells a discounted jammer: Dolfin swimsuit grab bag.  You can pick the size, but not the color.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Updates

Calendar

I have updated the calendar on the blog! Please let me know if you notice any mistakes or have questions.

Lost and Found

It has been started! I will have a small basket of lost and found items at practice. Swimmers should come check it regularly.

Swedish Fish

We will not have Friday dry land practice this week because there is no school that day. Swedish Fish will be earned for coming to all week day practices (this week that will be Tuesday and Thursday). The gummies will be handed out at the end of practice tomorrow.

First Practice Review and Updates :)

Review

We did it! We got through our first practice. First practices are always a bit rough around the edges, but we got through it! Every practice will get smoother as I figure things out and as the swimmers get used to swimming the yardage and my style of coaching. I learned so much today, and I hope you're swimmer did too. I'm excited to build upon what we accomplished today. Please pass along my encouragement to your swimmers. They all did great and I'm excited to see them back in the water on Thursday!

Polliwog Pick Up

Athletic Director, Doug Loiler and Principal Chang have worked together to come up with a solution to get us out quickly at pick up so that we can get to the pool. I told the Polliwogs and the parents on deck that we will start when everyone is there or at 3:45, whichever comes first. If you have Polliwogs that are trying to make it to the pool at 3:30, we have been told to park along side the gym but up the hill like you're going to exit the parking lot. Park as close to the curb as you can. They will walk out the swim kiddos and you can pick them up in front of the red gym door.

Locker Rooms!

I spoke to the pool owner. She has given us permission to use the locker rooms! We need to be sure to be quiet and respectful when we are there and in the hallways. We need to be out of the facility no later 5:30. Cubs and Cadets' practice will end at 5:20. So, there still won't be a lot of time for a shower but, there will be plenty of space now to get dressed!

Carpool

I am attaching a swim team roster with addresses, emails, and phone numbers. Please contact one another to arrange rides. I have space for one more swimmer on Thursdays in my car.

First Practice Information

Tuesday, October 9th

Practice Times

Polliwogs (Grades Kindergarten-3rd) begin at 3:30pm and end between 4:30 and 4:45pm (depending on when we get started). I will be at school pick-up right alongside everyone else. I would love to use all the pool time we can, so we'll try to start as close to 3:30 as we can, but if swimmers are not there and suited up right at 3:30 I'll understand.

Cubs (Grades 4th-6th) begin at 4pm and end at 5:20pm.

Cadets (Grades 7th & 8th) begin at 4pm and end at 5:20pm.

Practice Expectations

Please talk these over with your swimmer(s) before our first practice:

While waiting for practice to begin or end, swimmers not in the water need to be seated and quietly working on homework or reading. This will allow me to devote my full attention to the swimmers in the pool.

When swimmers are in the pool, their complete focus will need to be on me, one of our assistant coaches, and/or their workout. I will be strict about not allowing goofing around with friends in the pool. This expectation is two-fold: Safety of the swimmers and we only have a little available time for practice (we will strive to be good stewards of that time).

Equipment

Swimmers will need to bring:
  1.  a one-piece suit
  2. cap or rubber band for long hair
  3. towel
  4. warm clothes
  5. water bottle

Dressing Room

We will not have access to locker rooms. There is one dressing room/bathroom to change in. Swimmers will need to be quick to allow everyone a chance to change. Unfortunately, there are no showers available.

Guests

We are guests of Turtles Yoga and Wellness. We need to do our best to be good guests. Please be sure to encourage your swimmer(s) to help me leave the pool deck better than we found it each day. We will only have access to the pool area of Turtles Yoga and Fitness. The studio space will still be open during our practice time. Please help me encourage our swimmers to not be too loud and crazy as we enter practice. I would love for this location to become a permanent solution for our Swim Team for years to come.

I will have the door to the pool propped open for practice. The door will be on the left-hand side of the building (if you are facing the building). There will also be a sign. Do not enter through the main Turtles front door.

Parking

Parking is available in the lot right in front of the building that holds Turtles Yoga and Wellness as well as Willamette Dental. If the lot is full, the lot to the left of the building (if you are facing the building) is also available. Anything that says Willamette Dental is also available to us.

Pick Up

If you will be dropping off your swimmer for practice, please be sure to be at the pool no later than 5:30pm. We need to be off the premise by 5:30pm. I will be in the parking lot until the last swimmer is picked up.

Missing Practice

Life happens. If you will miss a practice and can let me know ahead of time, that would be great. Please email me if your swimmer is a club swimmer or participates in another sport and will only be attending one swim practice. It will help me plan for practice if I know which practices they will be at.

Volunteers

I am still on the lookout for parent volunteers interested and able to be an extra set of eyes and an extra voice on deck. There will also be times I'll need help writing down times and taking attendance.

Donations

I would love to offer a fun incentive for practice attendance. If you are willing to pick up 1 to 3 bags of Swedish Fish from Costco (they are $7 each), let me know! Swimmers will get a few Swedish Fish on Friday dry land practice if they made it to all 3 practices that week.

Please email me with any questions: swimteam@whcs.org

Prerequisite Skills Test (Tryouts)

Tomorrow, October 1st 4pm @ PDX Sports Center

8785 SW Beaverton Hillsdale Hwy, Portland, OR 97225

This skills test is for new to WHCS Swim Team only. I'll see you at 4pm!

Skills Test:
-Down and back on your front in a front crawl/freestyle (face in the water, arms coming out of the water, good kick, good forward).
-Down and back on their back (arms coming out of the water, good kick, good forward progress).

The pool is short only 16 or 17 yds. We will compete at pools that are 25yd. I'm looking for swimmers to be able to safely get across the pool and also to have a bit of endurance.

Tryouts are open to Kindergarten through 8th grade.

Please pass this post along to anyone you think might be interested in swimming on the team this year.

Email me (Lindsey Keller, Head Coach) at swimteam@whcs.org with any questions.

Parent Night

Last night was our swim team parent night. If you were not able to attend, no worries! Below you will find a link to the agenda. It has a lot of information about the coming season!

Parent Meeting Agenda from September 18th

Big News!

The big news of the night was that we were able to secure a 25yd pool for practice! Practice is Tues/Thur from 3:30-5:30 at the pool (click on the agenda above for location and specific division practice times) and Fri from 3:15-4:15 dryland practice at the school in the auditorium. The big change is that there will be no Sunday practice.

Heads Up!

We've been blessed to be able to secure the pool for a great rate this year! We will need to pay full price next year. I'd like to give all of you a heads up that next year we will need to include a pool fee in the registration cost. The more swimmers we get, the lower the pool fee! Please help us recruit!

If you have any questions please let me (Lindsey Keller, Head Coach) know @ swimteam@whcs.org.

Happy Summer!

I hope you all are enjoying your first full week of no school!  I hope you have some fun in the sun (don't forget the sunscreen), and go for a swim! :)

As you all should be aware of by now, I won't be returning to West Hills next year as a classroom teacher.  I have chosen to spend more time with my family and become a sub and only working a couple days a week.  In addition, I won't be returning as the Head Coach for the swim team.  So, I am hoping that someone will step up to be a Head Coach, will you be the one?  I will be around to be a mentor for this year, but I will also be coaching at the high school level again.  So, I will be willing to show anyone the ropes.

Please email me ASAP if you are interested or you have any questions.  Doug Loiler can also answer any questions.

All Star Meet info and program

The All Star Meet is this Saturday at the Mt. Hood CC Aquatic Center again.

Here are the details you need to know for our meet.  Plan to arrive on deck around 12:30 with your swimmer who is ready to swim, except for a shower, because warm-ups are from 1:00 to 1:20.  The meet will begin at 1:30.  It is ok to arrive later, if your swimmer is not in the beginning of the meet.  If this is the case, see the Meet Program (below) for the approximate time of their event.  Plan to arrive 90-60 minutes before they swim, and then they can use the shallow part of the pool for a proper warm-up.

The meet needs additional volunteers. As a school, we have satisfied our fair share, but the meet still needs 11 timers, 3 runners, and 8 bullpen workers. At this point, it is best to volunteer at the pool, but these positions are first-come.  The following people are already confirmed volunteers: Patrick Leslie (bullpen), Jon Dooley (bullpen), and Dan Bates (S/T). If you are volunteering for the meet, you should plan to arrive by 12:20, and maybe a little earlier if you want one of the extra spots Volunteers get in for FREE! All volunteers should go to the North Door to sign in and get a badge for free entry.

There will be an entry fee for this championship meet ($2 adult & $1 child [not swimmers]), unless you are volunteering. If you are volunteering, check-in at the volunteer desk to get an job badge, then you won't be charged. This year, heat sheets will be made available electronically, see below. No heat sheets will be sold at the meet.

Championship Meets / All Star Practice

WOW!  What great swims over the past two weekends by everyone!!  I am so happy to see each swimmer go out and try their best in the Championship meets.  I will post the results for both meets as soon as I have the final copies.

For the 10 swimmers that are swimming in the meet this weekend (All-Star Meet) we have our last two practices for the season on Tuesday and Wednesday from 5:00-6:00pm both days.  We will be working on their events exclusively, so come to one or both.  Coach Kevin will be at both practices to give some last minute pointers on their race(s).

Please remember to submit payment for the meet during practice this week.  I have only received two sets of entry fees.  It is $40 as a check to WHCS or cash will work too.

Cub / Cadet Championships

The Cub & Cadet Championship Meet is this Saturday, January 20 from 1:00-5:30pm at Mt. Hood CC in the bubble.  Keep in mind that this is day 1 of 2.  Different CYO teams swim on Sunday.  If your swimmer gets second place on Saturday, it will be combined with the results from Sunday's meet, and your swimmer might earn a different place due to the combination of results.

Here are the details you need to know for our meet.  This will be a large meet!  Plan to arrive on deck by 12:45 with your swimmer who is ready to swim, except for a shower.  If you are volunteering for the meet, you should plan to arrive by 12:20.  Look for our school's banner which will show our team location, and your swimmer will sit in that area.  Warm-ups will begin at 1:00 and the meet will begin around 1:30.  See the Meet Program (below) for an approximated timeline of all events.

If your cub or cadet swimmer needs to go to the bathroom during the meet, please have a plan for them, since they are all located inside the other building.  I will have limited coaches at the meet, and we will need to keep our focus on the swimmers in the water and the ones sitting in the stands.

Lastly, this is a longer meet, so your swimmer should plan to bring some food.  I suggest fruits and easy to eat finger foods.  They do not need a whole meal!  They should definitely have a PLASTIC water bottle.  They should also bring some activities to occupy the time that are not damaged if they get wet.

If you have any questions, feel free to email me.   FYI, replies to this email or blog post get lost in cyberspace.  Finally, if your swimmer isn't going to make it to the meet, email or text me (503-267-2346) ASAP!!

Polliwog Meet Program

You will find a link to the meet program below and on the sidebar of the blog.  Here are a couple points I'd like to make clear.

  1. Unlike previous years, NO meet programs will be sold on Sunday.  You must bring your own if you want a meet program.
  2. You will see that an estimated time is given for each event.  This is an estimate!
  3. You will see that up to 8 swimmers are entered in relays.  Only swimmers 5-8 are alternates for that race.  I may ask an alternate swimmer to swim, if there is a swimmer who doesn't show up.
  4. When your swimmer is done swimming, please check-out with the coaching staff to confirm that we don't need them for another relay.
See you on Sunday by 12:40 pm at the Mt. Hood CC Pool!

Meet Results / Polliwog Championship Meet info...

First of all, here are the meet results for the latest meet at Mt Hood CC.

Jan. 9 Results

The Polliwog Championship Meet is this Sunday, January 14 from 1:00-5:30pm at Mt. Hood CC in the bubble.  Again, only Polliwogs are entered in this meet!

Here are the details you need to know.  This will be a large meet!  Plan to arrive on deck by 12:45 with your swimmer who is ready to swim, except for a shower.  If you are volunteering for the meet, you should plan to arrive by 12:30.  Look for our school's banner which will show our team location, and your swimmer will sit in that area.  Warm-ups will begin at 1:00 and the meet will begin around 1:20.  I will have an approximated timeline of all events later this week and I will share it as soon as I get it.

There will be an entry fee for this championship meet ($2 adult & $1 child [not swimmers]), unless you are volunteering.  If you are volunteering, check-in at the volunteer desk to get an job badge, then you won't be charged.  This year, heat sheets will be made available electronically, and I will send the link once I have it.  No heat sheets will be sold at the meet.

If your polliwog swimmer will need to go to the bathroom during the meet, a parent will need to take them since they are all located inside the building.  Please make a plan with them before the meet on how they will find you if they need to go.

They should definitely have a water bottle.  They should also bring some activities to occupy the time that are not damaged if they get wet.

If you have any questions, feel free to email me.   FYI, replies to this email or blog post get lost in cyberspace. :(

Jan. 6 Meet

Below you will find the Meet Program for tomorrow's meet.  We will be at the Mt.Hood Community College pool, but this time we will be in the main (indoor) pool.  The warmups will begin at 2:00, so I would like to have all swimmers on the deck and ready to go at 1:45.  The meet will be done by 5:00 (and probably earlier since this will be a smaller meet than the past few).

Since the Mt. Hood CC campus is large, if you use Google Maps, you can search "Mt. Hood Community College Aquatics Center" and you will be directed to the correct building.

All Star Meet qualifiers

I have not done a good job of indicating qualifiers or qualifying times.  As we go into the final developmental meet, I want to make sure that all Cubs and Cadets know where they are since this is the last meet to qualify.

Below you will find both the qualifying times for this year and the list of swimmers who have already qualified.  I have also included a comprehensive list of all swimmers best times for this year.  This list has Polliwogs, Cubs, and Cadets on it, but remember...the All Star Meet is only for Cubs and Cadets.

Comprehensive List

If after looking at these documents, you want to change the entries for this last meet, just submit your entries again and I will use the most recent entries.  Please remember to submit all entries by Tuesday (tomorrow) at 8pm!
