Thank you all for a great Time Trial yesterday. I really enjoyed seeing all of the swimmers try their best and have fun at the end. If you have any suggestions to make this a better event for the future, please email me your ideas or suggestions!

Stop Watches Needed!!!!
Hello everyone,
Since this is our first time doing time trials, we realized that we don't have all the supplies we need. We are in need of at least 6 stop watches. The watches can be in any form that keeps time I.E. Wrist watches, iPhones, traditional stop watches, etc. The only requirement is that it times down to the hundredth of a second. Have a good rest of your day and I look forward to seeing all of you today.

NO DRYLAND PRACTICE TODAY!
I am sorry for the late notice, but it was just brought to my attention that there is no space for our dryland practice today. The auditorium will be set up for the concert tonight, and the gym has a basketball scrimmage scheduled.
Please plan to pick up your child at carpool or make arrangements for afterschool care. The Lobby can help forward messages if needed. I will also spread the word to all of the swimmers I see.
Sorry for the late notice!

Time Trials this Saturday!
You may have been wondering what is going on this weekend with the Time Trials. You will find all of the pertinent information you should need. First and foremost, it will be FUN! We have never tried anything like this before, so hopefully this will catch on as an annual event.
Time trials will be similar to a swim meet, but different. Swimmers will swim in a variety of events, but not bound to a certain a maximum number of events. Some of the events for the day will be traditional events for time recording purposes. Other events will be purely for fun and not timed. There will be a combination of individual events and relays.
Please arrive at the Beaverton Swim Center in the spectator section (on the side of the pool) around 3:45-4:00, not before 3:45. Warmups will begin at 4:15. The time trials will begin around 4:30. We will need some parents for timing, a parent to start the races. If you wish to help out, see the link below. After the races are done, the pool will be open for the swimmers to play around. The entire facility will be ours, including the diving boards, mats, and pool toys. We must be out of pool by 6:00, but you can feel free to leave anytime after the races are done, if you need to leave early.
Please note, there will NOT be a Sunday practice this week.
Please click here to let us know if your swimmer will be coming and if you can volunteer.

Dec. 6 meet program and details
Meet Program can be found here.
Here are some details for the meet on SUNDAY. It is at the Mt. Hood CC Aquatic Center again, but this time, we are swimming under the bubble. This is a much larger pool, so if your swimmer can become anxious, please let them know that they are swimming the same distance, but it just looks bigger.
Bathrooms are the other issue, they are located in the main building, so it can be quite a walk (there are no restrooms in the bubble). We will be telling all Polliwog swimmers to find their parent to walk them to the restroom, if needed during the meet. Please discuss with your cub and cadet if you wish them to do the same.
We are co-hosting this meet (in theory), but it appears the much larger team we are co-hosting with (they host meets often) has filled all the necessary volunteer spots. If you really want a volunteering role, email me. Otherwise, feel free to come, relax, and cheer.
Most of our meets up to this point have been about 100-120 swimmers, this will be a large developmental meet...around 180+ swimmers! Plan accordingly for travel time, parking, and finding a place to sit. I want to see all swimmers on deck by 12:40, but do not arrive at the facility before 12:15. Due to the large meet, warmups will start at 1:00, and they will be shortened. The meet will start by 1:15. The meet will conclude near 4:00, due to its size.
If for some reason you need to get in touch with me before the meet on Sunday (ill swimmer, traffic, blown tire) please text or call my cell - 503-267-2346.

Meet Entries and Meet Results
It is time to create the entries again for the next meet. Click here to enter your swimmer to the meet. As a reminder, remember that they can swim up to 3 individual events. The coaches will enter them in the relays. If, for some reason, they are not coming to the meet, please respond to let us know, so we do not include them on relays. Click here to enter you swimmer.
The meet will be on SUNDAY, Dec. 6 from 1 PM to 4 PM at the Mt. Hood CC pool. This time it will be the large pool in the bubble. This is the only meet this season that WHCS will host (or co-host). We co-host this meet with another large team, so they will provide a bunch of volunteers, but we need to come to help as much as we can. If you can volunteer, please click here!
I was informed tonight by some parents that I didn't provide results from our meet on Nov. 21, so here they are.

First swim meet of the season...today!
Our first meet of the season is upon us, and we are very excited. Warm-ups will begin at 3:30 today, so plan to arrive about 20 minutes early to the Mt. Hood CC Aquatic Center. It can be hard to find, but follow the CC's signs for the Aquatic center. The entrance is off of NE 17th and is on the south part of the property. Click here for a Google Map. The meet should last around 3 hours. Please have your swimmer check out with a coach before leaving.
Here is a good website that lists general swim meet basics from the USA Swimming website. Feel free to read it (in addition to my notes) for a good overview of swim meets in general.
Arriving and warm-up:
Swimmers should come to the team area on the deck in their swimsuits. Today, we can get into the water to begin warm ups at 3:30. We ask that everyone arrive on deck around 3:10-15 to get set up. Everyone must complete the warm-ups. This is the time for swimmers to get ready for their races, get their muscles warmed up, and get used to the pool they are swimming in. After warm-ups, we will have a quick team meeting and team cheer.
During the meet:
Snacks:
Since the meets are around three hours long, the swimmers may get hungry. The best snacking foods would be any light, and nutritious snack that won't make a mess on the pool deck. Goldfish, Ritz crackers, and Cheerios are poor choices due to how they make a mess once wet on the pool deck. Fruit, peanut-free trail mix, wheat thins, etc... are all great choices.
Communication:
If you need to contact a coach for any reason, call or text Coach Kevin (503-267-2346). Especially if a swimmer will not show up for the meet. We make all of the relays, and it is easier to substitute someone if they tell us in advance if they are not coming (even if its an hour before).

During the meet:
After the team meeting, swimmer will go to the area where they are sitting and wait there until his/her first event is called. Due to the length of the meet, swimmers should plan to occupy themselves by cheering, reading a book (that could possibly get wet), chatting with friends, or sitting with their parents. No electronics should be on the pool deck, due to the proximity of the water. They will need to make sure they are paying attention to what event is swimming. The announcer will announce events and heats. Let your swimmer know that they should go to the bullpen (staging area) once they get their meet entry card, and they need to keep it dry and walk to the bullpen. There will be volunteers to help them get to the right lane in the correct heat of the event. If the swimmer is not in the lane behind the starting block for their heat and event, the starter will not wait for them, so it is important that they follow the meet.

Nov. 7 Meet Program
I have posted the Meet Program on the blog's main page, under the Important Links section. You can also find it here. If you want a meet program, you must print it and bring it, there will NOT be any programs handed out at the meet. I will always try to post it by 5 pm every Friday before our swim meets.
NOTE: You cannot view the Important Links section from a mobile device. You must view it from a computer. Sorry!
I will post the meet details later today, but know that you will need to be at the Mt. Hood Community College Aquatic Center around 3:00 pm tomorrow, because the warm-ups will begin at 3:30.

Tuesday practices added and meet entries
Tuesday Practice!
Tuesday practices will begin this week from 4:30-5:30 for all ages.
Since VC practices end at 4:30 on Tuesdays (due to school-wide early dismissal) we will begin our practice at 4:30 for everyone. It will only be a one hour practice for everyone.
I just updated the practice schedule, so double check it to confirm your practice times. I have also attached the practice schedule signup here.
Meet Entries!
I am excited for our first developmental meet at the Mt. Hood CC Aquatic Center (I will send the exact address later this week) from 3:30 to 6:30 pm this Saturday! I need you to let me know if your swimmer will be participating OR NOT. Also, you can help your swimmer select the events for their meet, if there is something they want to swim. If you would rather me to choose, please click the box to let me know they will be there and leave the event entry sections blank. YOU MUST HAVE ALL ENTRIES COMPLETED BY 9PM TUESDAY NIGHT! If there is NO response, I assume your swimmer will not be participating! My entries are due to CYO by noon on Wednesday, and it is nearly impossible to enter them in the meet after noon on Wednesday.
Click here for meet attendance and selecting your events.
Each swimmer can swim up to three individual events and one relay or two individual events and two relays. I will assign all relays. Here is a listing of all events.

Swimsuit issues!
I am writing to catch everyone up on a major issue we have been having with the suits this year. I will be brief with the problem...JD Pence will not be our suit retailer this year. From our first contact in August and until now, we have been met with brick walls. It is our desire to have new suits for everyone who wants one before our first meet on November 7. The only way to do this is to switch retailers. Do not go to JD Pence! If you already have already purchased a suit from them, please contact me.
For this to happen, Coach Candace has made contact with a new retailer. They have expedited fitting suits (and extra suits to purchase) to arrive by Friday's Dryland practice. If you are wanting a new suit, you NEED to come to the dryland practice...heck...everyone should be coming to dryland practices! :) There will be some suits ready for immediate purchase, but cash is required. Girls suits will be $40 and boys suits will be $32. If we don't have any more of your size on Friday, we will be able to order it in time to arrive by Saturday November 7.
Those with team suits from the last two seasons, or lightly used training suits that no longer fit your kiddos, please bring them! Folks who bring old suits will have the first opportunity to swap, if the sizes are available. The rest will sell for $5 apiece, with one exception (a brand new, never used suit from last year).
We'll start the exchange and suit fitting about 15 minutes before the end of dryland practice in the Cafeteria/Gym. Parents are welcome to come a little earlier to help set up the exchange or discuss the new suits.
If you can't be there Friday and are willing to still donate, please have your child give the suit to Lilly or Gwen McFarland sometime this week, or bring to practice.

What is it?
In short: Donate old suits, swap small team/training suits for ones that fit, buy a used suit for $5 (proceeds go to the team)

Lastly, I will send an updated practice schedule tomorrow. I will send meet info toward the later part of the week. Lots of info coming soon...stay tuned.

No practice today / Dryland tomorrow
Just a quick reminder that the pool at Valley Catholic is closed today for repairs.
Dryland practice tomorrow will happen from 3:15 to 4:15. Coach Roslyn and Coach Candace will lead the athletes through some stroke rule clarifications, and physical activity. Athletes should bring activewear (including shoes) and a water bottle.
Please pick up your students by the gym doors or in the auditorium at 4:15, or make arrangements for them to stay in afterschool care.

Schedule update...two cancellations!
First of all, I am very sorry that I haven't been around much lately, nor communicated fully over the past couple weeks. Last week, we took possession and moved into a new house. This week, I'm in the process of cleaning and handing the keys over of our old residence. Soon, this craziness will be over, and you will have the good ol' Coach Kevin back! :)
Now for the first of two important schedule changes for this week. There will NOT be practice on Thursday. The Valley Catholic swim coach contacted me today to inform me of this. They will be permanently fixing a temporary fix that affects the pool.
Next, the swim meet that was scheduled for this weekend, will not be happening. It is cancelled. It was going to be the a time trial to prepare for our first developmental meet on November 7.

Registration issues...practices impacted!
Currently we have 21 people signed up. Our first year, we had over 40 swimmers and last year we had over 50. I was projecting between 40 and 50 swimmers when I committed to weekend rentals at the Beaverton. Due to our low numbers, at this point we will not be renting at the Beaverton Swim Center until we can achieve about 40 swimmers registered. This is strictly from a financial stand-point. With our current registration amount, at 40 swimmers, we were able to pay for the rentals, but at this point we cannot afford it without raising the already high registration amount.
Additionally, due to only 4 people signing up for Tuesday practices from the Practice Sign-up (if you haven't signed up, please do so) I created last week, it does not make sense for us to have practice on that day. Starting this week, practices will be only Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 4:00-5:00 for Polliwogs (K-3) and 4:00-5:30 for Cubs and Cadets (4-8). Furthermore, Thursday has a couple more people signed up, and if the number of average participants is less than 10 for the first couple weeks, we may cancel that practice too in the future.
I have been trying to get more people interested in swimming for West Hills, but I need your help at this point for us to grow. If you could spread the word of how great the sport is to your friends, it would be much appreciated! Also, I have heard some people are confused about one fact...if you are competing in another sport (WHCS or non-WHCS), we are only asking them to come to one practice a week until their season is over.
Please pray for our team, so we can return to our robust numbers of swimmers!

Practice sign-ups and a little info...
Now is the time to sign up for your practice time for the season. At this point in time, our registration number are significantly lower than this time last year. With these lower number, we can offer in-water practice twice during the weekdays at the Valley Catholic pool. If our numbers increase two-fold (which I hope it does), we will have to limit the practices to once during the weekdays.
The Friday Dryland practice at WHCS starting on 10/16 from 3:15 to 4:30 is optional, but encouraged. The weekend swimming practices at the Beaverton Swim Center starting on 10/17 is strongly encouraged. More info on the weekend practices will be coming out soon.
Please click here to sign up your swimmer for particular day(s).

This week's events
This week we begin, practice for the Cubs (4th-6th) and Cadets (7th-8th) on Monday and Wednesday from 4:00 - 5:30pm at the Valley Catholic pool. There is constructions on one of the adjacent buildings to the pool, so the entry to the pool is different than last year. Please look for the new entry.
Also, if you have a first time swimmer, we would like to see what their swimming looks like from a safety standpoint. Additionally, we would like to assess if they know any of the other strokes. We will be conducting this on Monday (10/5) anytime from 5:00-5:30, it should only take about 10 minutes in the water. If you can't make this one time safety check, please email the coaching staff to find other possible times.
There will not be Friday dryland practice or any practice this weekend.

Registration and Adjusted practice schedule
The season starts in 3 days! Are you registered? If not, click here. If you are, please continue to tell your friends about the team, WE NEED MORE SWIMMERS! For some reason, our registration numbers are much smaller, compared to this time last year!
Here is a little known fact...ANYONE can swim for our team, not just WHCS students. Homeschool, public school, or other private school students can register for our team. When they register through the above link, they need to indicate that they are registering for an "Exception", and indicate that they want to swim for West Hills Christian School. It's a couple more hoops to jump through than a WHCS student has to go through, so email Coach Kevin if there are any questions.
Also, if you need financial assistance (or know someone who does) to register due to family hardship or multiple athletes from one family, contact Coach Kevin. CYO has scholarships available.
At the Parent Meeting on 09/29 (see my notes here), I indicated that practices will begin on Monday 10/5 at the Valley Catholic Pool for our Cub (4th-6th grade) and Cadet (7th & 8th grade) athletes only. While this is true, we will have an adjusted practice schedule of only Monday 10/5 and Wednesday 10/7 for that week. Cubs and Cadets who are already registered are encouraged to come to both practices if they can. We will begin practices for everyone on Monday 10/12 for all ages.
For any swimmers who this is their first year, I must perform a safety check to make sure they can swim 25 yards safely. The ONLY Safety Check will be on Monday 10/5 at 5:00-5:30. If you have a first year swimmer and cannot make that time, please email and we may be able come up with an alternate time for you. If you swimmer is a Cub or Cadet, I will conduct those at the beginning of practice on Monday or Wednesday.
Please note...this year, practices are a little different. Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday, practice will go from 4:00-5:30, but 5:00-5:30 is for Cubs and Cadets only. If you have a Polliwog (K-3rd grade), their practice will end at 5:00 on those days. Tuesday practices will continue this year from 4:30-5:30 for everyone!
Please look for another email, during the weekend to sign up for specific days. Again this year, we will have a weekend day practice at the Beaverton Swim Center, the schedule for the exact days (starting in a couple weeks) will be coming soon.
Blessings,
Coach Kevin

Parent Meeting - 9/29!
Hi all,
I just wanted to make sure that I announced the PARENT MEETING one more time. It was hidden in my previous post, so I want this to be loud and clear. :)
I just wanted to make sure that I announced the PARENT MEETING one more time. It was hidden in my previous post, so I want this to be loud and clear. :)

2015-2016 Info here!
The season is upon us, and here is most of the information you will need to know! There will be a pre-season Parent Meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 29 from 7-8pm in the Auditorium at WHCS. If you wish, you can wait to hear all of the final information that night before registering. If you are ready to register, please click here.
Here is the plan this year, which is much like last year's plan.
We will practice primarily at the Valley Catholic Pool (Murray Rd./ Farmington Rd. in Beaverton) M-Th after school from 4-5 (Tuesdays will be 4:30-5:30). Friday dry land practices will be at WHCS from 3:15-4:15 every Friday we have school. We also will practice at the Beaverton Swim Center on a weekend day in the late afternoon. I will urge all swimmers to attend a minimum of two practices a week, unless you are on another WHCS sports team or on another swim team. The exact days of the week your swimmer will swim will be announced soon. Our meets are mostly on Saturday afternoons on 11/07, 11/14, 11/21, 12/06 (Sun) & 01/09 on the east-side of Portland at a variety of pools. All swimmers must plan make at least three meets this year. If this is not possible, please contact Coach Kevin for alternatives are needed.
Practices for 4th grade and up (Cubs & Cadets) will begin on 10/05, while 3rd grade and below (Polliwogs) will begin on 10/12. Everyone will continue swimming through to the championship meets (everyone swims in at least one championship meet) in mid/late-January.
I do conduct a swimming evaluation for all NEW swimmers. This is to assure that all swimmers are able to swim (non-stop) 25 yards safely. It doesn't have to be a racing stroke (although preferred), then we will teach the rest! The evaluation will either be Oct. 5 or 6 more info soon on this, and you may wait to register if you are concerned about your child's safety.
I am in need of help this year! Particularly, I need SWIM COACHES & Stroke and Turn Judges. Stroke and Turn Judges work at swim meets and we are required to have two working judges for most meets; currently we have ONE. Some prior swimming knowledge is needed, and training is provided. If we could have four parents volunteer to be Judges, this would really spread the load out! MORE COACHES are needed to give the swimmers the best possible experience. Have you ever considered coaching? No swimming experience is necessary. You will receive some great training from the experienced, returning coaches. Qualifications for this role is that you are a parent who can help encourage the kids and keep them moving and safe in the water. If you are interested or have questions, contact Coach Kevin!
Please don't hesitate to email any questions!

T-shirts tomorrow...for the awards!
I have been asked by a couple parents if we could get a "team photo" tomorrow. In an attempt to make this happen, could you have your swimmer wear their red WHCS shirts to the Award Ceremony on Monday evening from 6:30-7:30? Thank you!
Reminder...Awards tomorrow!
Just a quick reminder of our season ending awards celebration tomorrow (Monday) evening from 6:30-7:30 in the auditorium at West Hills.
I think there may be a small special treat for the swimmers! :)

Results for Polliwog and Division
Here are the results for the Polliwog and Division championships. I apologize for the delay in getting the Polliwog results up!
Note for the Division results: First, all places on this sheet ARE final, so swimmers will be awarded ribbons from this sheet. The points ARE NOT final. This is part one of two meets. The rest of the teams swim today, and the two day meet is combined into one large meet. I will publish those results with the new point totals when I get them (early this coming week).

Division entries
I was finally able to access this information. Sorry about the delay!
Since CYO has not yet published the heat and lane information for the meet, I have published a list of what your swimmer will be swimming. Please note that the relays are not 100% confirmed until the day of the meet, due to absences. Please confirm with a coach before your swimmer leaves tomorrow.
Division Meet update...
Hi all,
I just realized that I have not sent any info out about tomorrow! I am very sorry. Here is all of the info you will need. If you feel I have missed anything, please ask!!!
We are swimming at the Mt. Hood CC pool, same place as the last meet. Warm-ups begin at 1:00 sharp with assigned lanes, and the meet will start at about 1:45. Please have all swimmers in their suits, ready to swim, and with the coaches by 12:40. With over 300 swimmers at this meet, it is important to give extra time for parking, changing, finding our team area, and getting situated. The meet should be over around 5:30.
Since we will be swimming in the outdoor pool, please have a plan for your child to go to the bathroom, since they are located at the indoor pool building.
Since this is a Championship Meet, there is an entrance fee of $2 adults / $1 children. Swimmers, coaches, and volunteers get in for free (follow the signs).
Also, I do not have access to the meet program for this meet. If you want a meet program, they will be sold at the event. I'm not sure how much they will charge, but I believe it will be $1-2. Please come prepared.

Practice clarification...
When I said that practices run all week this week, I was, of course, describing Tuesday - Thursday. :)
Unfortunately, VC pool is not available on No School days to us, so today is not an option. But, I encourage your swimmer to swim somewhere else today...maybe the bathtub?!?

WOW! Polliwogs, practices, and
WOW! The Polliwogs swam great today! So many PR's!! I am a very happy coach to see such amazing efforts by everyone. They each knew it was a championship meet, and they all performed amazingly, with many their fastest times...EVER!
Next weekend, it is the cubs and cadets turn to show their best swims! I can't wait to see what the meet holds. There will be more information about the meet coming this week.
All-Star meet entries are offically due on Monday (tomorrow) at 9pm. Currently I have entries from, Dutt, Gowens, McFarland, Farmer x2, Craft, Jaramillo, Parker, Powers, Reynolds x2, and Killian x2. Please provide checks to WHCS for $35 for each swimmer. They must be handed to Coach Kevin before the All-Star Meet; at school via your swimmer is fine.
All-Star meet entry form
We still need volunteers...badly! We need 5 more people for the Division meet, and thank you to the Gowens, Killian, Farmer, Dutt x2, Mittelstaedt, and Vreugdenhil families. And, we also need 5 more people for the All-Star meet, and thank you to the Gowens, Farmer, and Dutt x2 familes.
Championship meet volunteering form
Finally, our practice schedule this week is slightly adjusted. ALL practices at VC will be from 4-5! (Including Tuesday) VC has an adjusted school schedule which allows us to have the pool by ourselves from 4-5 all week. We will still have our last Dryland Practice from 3:15 - 4:30 on Friday.

Division Meet entries and volunteers...
First, we are still in need of quite a few volunteers for the Division and All-Star meets! Please, volunteer...HERE! Thank you to the Farmer, Gowens, and Killian families for volunteering.
As a reminder, the last meets are coming up quickly. The Polliwog meet is this weekend (1/18), and 10 of 12 swimmers are attending. It is going to be a great meet, with more information coming in the next couple days.
For the Division Meet, I have only heard from 8 families (Dutt, Gitt, Golden, Gowens, Killian, McFarland, Mittelstaedt, and Woody). This is the last meet for some, and it is a fun and fast meet. Plan to come to this great meet!
Division Meet entry form. Please enter by 9PM Tuesday night.
The final meet of the season is the All-Star meet. It is even "faster" and "funner" and it is for QUALIFIED cubs and cadets. Please note, this is a fee-based meet. All swimmers will need to pay $35 (via check to WHCS) whether they swim in one, two, or three individual events. There are no relays, and swimmers only swim against swimmers in their grade.

Polliwog Championship Meet
Attached you will find the Polliwog Championship Meet entry form. This form is ONLY for polliwogs. If you have cub or cadet swimmers, you do not need to respond for them. All Polliwogs are able and invited to swim in this championship meet that will have all the Polliwogs from all of the CYO teams at the same pool at the same time.
To assist with that number of swimmers, WHCS is responsible to have 3 volunteers. If we don't provide at least 3 volunteers, coaches will be pulled to assist. The greatest need is for timers, bullpen, and runners. Please email me if you would like to volunteer and the position you desire. The sooner the better, because once that position fills, you will be placed in another position at the meet directors discretion.

Meet results and practice TONIGHT!
First of all, thank you all for volunteering for VERY well run meet. I had several of the other coaches come up to me afterward and tell me how well run it was.
THANK YOU ALL! There are so many families, I can't identify each of you, but I really tried to thank each one of individually for your time
Here are the meet results, and they will be posted to the blog.
Also, please do not forget about the practice tonight at the Beaverton Swim Center. It goes from 6-7. The last two weeks (before Christmas Break) we had about 10 swimmer! We have the entire pool and several coaches, so it is a great time to get extra instruction and a great workout. Only two more weeks of Sunday practices (this week and next week).
